Statement Single Parents Fund
A new maintenance fund is planned for single parents in Austria from July 1, 2026. It will come into effect if no maintenance or advance maintenance payments are made for a child. Not everything is finalized yet, as the draft law is still to be reviewed, but the step is already very relevant in terms of social policy.
Our counseling work clearly shows that violence, financial dependence and social insecurity are often closely linked. Women who simultaneously care for children, secure their livelihood and live under insecure conditions are particularly affected. For many women with migration experience, there are additional hurdles, such as language barriers, complicated procedures or uncertain prospects under residence law.
This is precisely why the planned fund is more than just a short-term cash benefit. Financial stability creates room for maneuver. It can help people to leave stressful or violent situations and support them on their way to a self-determined life.
However, it is also important to remember that money alone is not enough. Affordable childcare, secure housing, access to work, psychosocial support and fair access to education are also needed. Anyone talking about violence prevention must also talk about poverty, participation and structural barriers.
We therefore expressly welcome the planned measure and hope that it will be implemented in a way that takes full account of the realities of life for single mothers, especially women with experience of migration.

THANKS Gala 2026
On May 14, the THANKS Gala 2026 took place in Vienna – an important evening of visibility and appreciation for single parents. The Counseling Center for Migrants was also represented and contributed its expertise on single mothers in the context of migration, with a special focus on the experiences from counseling.
This issue is particularly important for women affected by violence. It is also positive that new financial support is planned for single parents in Austria from July 1, 2026. Not everything is fixed yet, but we hope to see tangible improvements for affected women and their children.
